Our clients building a Japanese timber home are also building a garage apartment on their property.
The garage apartment, also called a carriage house, will be built first and act as our client’s main residence while the main house is built. The ground floor houses the traditional two-car garage with storage space around the perimeter for tools, sports equipment, and other miscellaneous items.
The carriage house apartment original design placed a sleeping area into one of the two dormers and a main central area containing the living, storage and bathroom.
Because our clients will be living in the garage apartment for 2-3 years until the main house is finished construction, they wanted the design to reflect more living space, including a separate bedroom with a walk-in closet. To accommodate the added living space, the carriage house was widened and the floor plan redesigned.
Carriage houses generally feature an open floor plan and can be designed in any architectural style, making them a great addition to any property. The garage apartment design will continue through the design process until the plan meets our clients needs – stay tuned!
